About HBV

Hepatitis B virus, (HBV), is a species of the genus Orthohepadnavirus, which is likewise a part of the Hepadnaviridae family of viruses with a circular, partially double stranded DNA genome of 3,200 bp. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a major causative agent of chronic hepatitis and can cause liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Hepatitis viruses B (HBV) which predominantly transmit through the parenteral route, pose a serious “silent epidemic” challenge to India. In the South-East Asia region, the estimated burden of chronic HBV infection is 100 million. The average estimated carrier rate of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in India is 3.7 %, with a total pool of over 40 million carriers.

Quantitation of HBV DNA is useful in the evaluation and management of the patients with chronic HBV infection. Current WHO guidelines also recommend HBV DNA viral load testing in disease response and/or treatment response
