About Herpes Simplex Cirus (HSV):

HSV is very contagious and can be spread by direct contact with sores and sometimes by contact with the oral and genital areas of people who have chronic HSV infection even when no sores can be seen. Widespread infection may occur in newborns or in people with a weakened immune system, particularly those who have HIV infection. 

HSV-1 is mainly transmitted by oral-to-oral contact to cause oral herpes (which can include symptoms known as “cold sores”), but can also cause genital herpes. Generally HSV-1 primary infections are acquired as subclinical or unrecognized infections. 

HSV-2 is a sexually transmitted infection that causes genital herpes. After the first (primary) infection, HSV, like other herpesviruses remains dormant (latent) in the body and can periodically reactivate and cause symptoms. 

Although usually asymptomatic, HSV infections can cause a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations, including oral herpes, genital herpes, neonatal herpes, encephalitis and ocular herpes.

PathoDetectTM HSV type 1&2 assay is an in vitro diagnostic test for the direct, qualitative detection and differentiation of herpes simplex virus type I (HSV-l) and type 2 (HSV-2) DNA from male and female skin lesions from genital or oral sites. The test is intended for use as an aid in the diagnosis of HSV infection in symptomatic patients. The assay is not intended for prenatal screening. 

This diagnostic test kit utilizes the real time polymerase chain reaction for HSV (Type 1&2)  detection.

A combination of validated primers, hydrolysis probes, and hot-start DNA polymerase ensures that the kit leads to highly-specific and ultrasensitive results in a single step.
