Ever since the introduction of the first transgenic plant, the Flavr Savr TM tomato, many other transgenic or genetically modified plants (GMO) have been developed. According to the EU and Swiss legislation for food, only deregulated traits of transgenic plants are allowed to be imported and sold to the consumer. Testing for the presence of CaMV 35S and Tnos sequences has been commonly used as a screening tool for detection of genetically engineered (GE) plant material since most or all GE events/products in commerce contained one or the other or both. Exclusive CaMV genomic region can be included to rule out the natural presence of CaMV in plants.

Diagnosis of GMO plants

AgroDex GMO plant identification kit allows qualitative real time PCR detection of transgenic DNA by targeting regulatory regions approved by the EU. To attain the highest possible coverage of commercialized GMOs, various regulatory regions as per EU guidelines were selected: 35S promoter region of the cauliflower mosaic virus (P-35S), the nopalin synthase gene terminator from Agrobacterium tumefaciens (T-nos), 34S promoter from Figwart Masaic virus (P34S) . Exclusive CaMV genomic region has also been detected to rule out the natural presence of CaMV in plants. It also includes endogenous reference gene for specific detection of plant DNA, as the use of reference gene helps to exclude the possibility of false negative results due to the possible inhibitor presence or inappropriate DNA quality.
